Some 70,000 chemicals are being dumped into our environment, 65,000 of which are potentially hazardous to our health. We live in a virtual sea of pollutants, and carry many of these toxins within us. They can be found even in unborn children. A 2004 study by the Environmental Working Group identified 287 industrial chemicals in babies’ umbilical-cord blood, including 180 known to cause cancer and 217 that are toxic to the brain and nervous system.
As many as 25% of Americans are estimated to suffer from some degree of heavy metal poisoning, particularly from mercury, lead, cadmium and arsenic. We are also exposed to a significant amount of radiation and increasing viral attacks. Our immune systems are further compromised by poor nutrition and unhealthy lifestyles, and most of us suffer from an excessively acidic pH level, which creates an internal environment in which cancer – as well as viral, bacterial and fungal infections – can thrive.
SOURCES OF TOXIC POLLUTION
Water – Chlorine, Fluorine Copper, Asbestos
Heavy Metals – Mercury, Cadmium and Lead are the three most common toxic heavy metals found in the body.
- Mercury is found in public water, seawater, fish and seafood. The ‘silver’ amalgam fillings in your teeth are one of the worst sources of mercury poisoning.
- Cadmium is contained in superphosphate fertiliser and we absorb cadmium from the food made from plants grown in soils in which these fertilisers. Cadmium also builds up in your body when you drink coffee regularly.
- Lead – the most common source of lead pollution is from vehicle exhausts. High levels of lead pollution are also found in the tap water of new houses, in which copper plumbing has been joined with solder. Other sources are cosmetics, paint, cigarettes and pesticides.
Cosmetics and Toiletries – shampoos, soaps, cleaning and shaving products, cosmetics, toothpaste and mouthwash can all be absorbed through your skin or mouth.
Food – the average person eats 5kg of food additives each year. If they are not consuming non-organic fruit and vegetables, 4.5 litres of pesticides and herbicides were sprayed on the foods they are.
Aluminium is widely used in food packaging, cheaper forms of cookware, deodorants, antacid medications, public water supplies and toothpaste.
Plastics can contain several thousand different chemicals, none of which the plastics industry is obliged to disclose. Plastic food wrapping and containers are particularly suspect. Never heat foods in plastic, particularly in a microwave oven. Plastic should not be used for the storage of food or drink, neither is cling film recommended for wrapping. Glass is the preferred storage material for all food and drink.
HOUSEHOLD PRODUCTS

Marking pens, highlighters, artist’s paints and other stationery are an insidious source of toxins.
Washing, cleaning, polishing, insulation materials, glues, solvents, carpet, paint, plastic, bleaching, deodorising, perfusing, antibacterial and thousands of other household products contain a myriad of chemicals you could not hope to be aware of.
